Bachelor in Communication Systems (SCom)

The Communication Systems (SCom) program prepares students to design, implement, and manage advanced telecommunication and network infrastructures. Through the Project-Centered Learning (PCL) methodology, students combine theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on projects that evolve from foundational computing and signal principles to cutting-edge wireless, optical, and IoT communication systems.

Program Overview

Year 1 – Common Foundation:
Students begin with a shared foundational year across all ITN programs. Courses in Mathematics, Physics, Programming, and Electronics build the analytical and technical base essential for understanding modern communication systems.

Year 2 – Foundations of Communication Systems:
This stage introduces students to Computer Architecture, Microprocessor Programming, and Electronic Instrumentation. Learners acquire a strong grasp of Signal Processing, Information Theory, and Object-Oriented Programming. They also develop professional ethics and cross-cultural communication skills through courses in Kiswahili or Chinese and Digital Ethics.
Projects focus on integrating sensors, measuring systems, and microcontrollers to form the basis of embedded communication platforms.

Year 3 – Networks and Digital Transmission Systems:
Students explore the principles of Network Design, Database Architecture, and Internet of Things (IoT) concepts. Advanced modules cover Wireless Protocols, Sensor Networks, and Wave Propagation Theory, including Antenna and Microwave Systems.
Practical sessions emphasize Network Administration and Digital Communication Systems, enabling students to configure, optimize, and secure communication links. Each semester culminates in a project where students design and demonstrate network prototypes or IoT communication applications.

Year 4 – Advanced Systems and Integration:
The curriculum progresses to Operating Systems (Windows, Linux, Android, iOS), System Administration, Digital Transmission Networks, and Switching and Routing Technologies. Students study WAN Networks, Network Programming Services, and Cybersecurity, gaining both theoretical depth and technical versatility.
Courses in Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Project Management enhance their ability to innovate within industrial or research contexts. Through their projects, students prototype intelligent, connected communication systems and explore optimization of telecommunication networks.

Year 5 – Intelligent, Secure, and Connected Communications:
The final year deepens expertise in Mobile Data Networks, Advanced Wireless Architectures, and Radio, Optical, and Satellite Communications. Students also engage with Cloud Computing, Smart Technologies, and Digital Forensics.
The program concludes with a Final Project and a Supervised Internship, allowing learners to apply their accumulated knowledge in real-world industrial, research, or regulatory environments.

Project-Centered Learning (PCL)

Each academic year integrates a project module, guiding students from basic communication prototypes to complex, scalable networked solutions. These projects strengthen teamwork, critical thinking, and innovation — key skills in today’s rapidly evolving digital communication landscape.
